Hello THT Members, today I am going to talk about IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol).

What is IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)?

IMAP is an e-mail protocol made by Stanford University in 1986 to provide an e-mail exchange service.

With the inception of the Internet, it was mandatory to develop a number of services in order to enable some operations. The requirement for sending e-mails over the internet has emerged due to the increasing use of the internet, the easier access of all users to the internet and also the need for speed. IMAP is one of those protocols that allow us to send e-mail over the internet.

How does IMAP work?

IMAP operates by displaying all of the e-mails that the user receives or sends from all clients with the relevant account installed. All e-mails sent to you or sent by you are arranged and copied to the server. When you send/receive e-mail from other clients (Outlook, Gmail, etc.), all data on the server will be copied to all devices. In this way, e-mails received or forwarded provide great benefits to the user as the relation between devices.

Differences Between IMAP and POP

The IMAP protocol has a useful feature that will conduct on all devices by providing the relation. Therefore, the user can access their data from all supported devices. However, there is no such situation in the POP protocol which might be a huge downside.

The POP protocol works unilaterally and a message on the server can only be viewed on the client from which device it was downloaded. This causes users to not be able to access their data on all devices. Therefore, POP installation is not recommended for users who use e-mail with different clients.

What is an IMAP port?

The user who needs to use the IMAP protocol has to enter a port number according to the connection type on the application they want to use. A connection to the SMTP server will be acquired through this port number, and a compatible ground will be prepared for e-mail exchange. There are 2 different port options for IMAP. These ports are 143 and 993 and there is not even a tiny difference between them.

PORT No:143

It is the default port number of the IMAP protocol. No security options are forced. While using this port, the security option must be selected as non-existent.

PORT No:993

Port numbered 993 is the option selected by users who want to use the IMAP connection with the encryption method. Here you need to select the connection type as SSL. However, this connection type must be supported by the server and the relevant port must be open on the server.

...With THT's best wishes...
