A young member of the Lapsus hacking group has been found guilty by a jury in London for hacking Uber and fintech company Revolut, and for attempting to blackmail the developers of the best-selling video game Grand Theft Auto, during the developmental stage of the upcoming GTA 6 game. Meanwhile, it was noted that 17-year-old Arion Kurtaj is autistic.
The computer hacker named Arion Kurtaj began committing cybercrimes on his own in September 2022, after being released on bail for his previous offenses.
CAUSED $3 MILLION DAMAGE TO UBER
Prosecutors stated that he targeted Revolut, gaining access to the information of around 5,000 Revolut customers, and then proceeded to target Uber two days later, causing approximately $3 million in damages to the company
THREATENED TO SHARE GTA 6
Kurtaj later hacked Rockstar Games and threatened to release the source code of the company's planned Grand Theft Auto 6 game in a Slack message sent to all Rockstar personnel.
Jurors at the Southwark Crown Court were shown leaked images of Grand Theft Auto that Kurtaj had hacked and uploaded to an online gaming forum
AUTISTIC HACKER
Due to the assessment by psychiatrists that Kurtaj, who is autistic, was not fit to stand trial, the jury was asked to determine whether he had committed the actions rather than deciding guilty or not guilty verdicts.
DEMANDED $4 MILLION RANSOM FOR SERVER DATA
Previously, Kurtaj had hacked and extorted £4 million from BT Group, the UK's largest broadband provider, and mobile operator EE, in 2021. He had threatened to delete data on the servers if the ransom wasn't paid.
In February 2022, he hacked the renowned tech giant Nvidia, obtaining around 1 terabyte of sensitive data, releasing approximately 80 gigabytes of it, and threatening to release the rest.
Prosecutors stated that Kurtaj and an unnamed 17-year-old accomplice, whose identity was withheld for legal reasons and whose case was heard alongside Kurtaj's, were key players in the Lapsus group.
FOUND GUILTY OF 12 OFFENSES
The jury in court found Kurtaj guilty of 12 offenses, including three counts of extortion, two counts of fraud, and six charges under the Computer Misuse Act.
After his arrest by the police in 2022, a few weeks later, he also admitted charges related to the hacking of the London Police Department's cloud storage.
While Kurtaj was arrested, the other accomplice, a 17-year-old defendant, is expected to be released on bail.
