While large technology companies are often the targets of hacker groups, now one of Turkey's most prestigious universities, Middle East Technical University (METU), has become the target of a hacker group called KromSec. It is alleged that as a result of this attack, the university's data has been leaked!
METU Falls Victim to Hackers!
According to a post shared on Twitter last night by an account called 'DailyDarkWeb,' the hacker group known as KromSec claims to have gained access to the data of METU, one of Turkey's esteemed universities.
The statement issued by KromSec includes the following remarks:
'Middle East Technical University is one of the best universities in the country. It would have been great if their security levels were also among the 'best'! The university database, which houses dozens of students, academics, and information systems, has been breached. It's a known fact that we love the students. That's why we're only sharing a table containing academics and reminding the university administration that KromSec has accessed their systems! Why is your security system not the 'best,' even though you have the best students in the country?'
As of now, there has been no statement from KVKK (Personal Data Protection Authority) or METU administration regarding these claims. However, Habib Karataş, a well-known developer in the data recovery sector, has mentioned that this breach occurred approximately 12 days ago, and communication was initiated with METU administration. Still, due to a lack of a significant response, the data was shared.
This incident once again underscores the challenges in the cybersecurity of institutions and how critical data security measures are. In the coming days, more details and official statements on the matter are expected.
