What is Signal Intelligence?
Signal Intelligence is intelligence-gathering by interception of signals, whether communications between people or from electronic signals not directly used in communication. Signals intelligence is a subset of intelligence collection management. As sensitive information is often encrypted, signals intelligence in turn involves the use of cryptanalysis to decipher the messages. Traffic analysisthe study of who is signaling whom and in what quantityis also used to integrate information again. ELINT
Electronic intelligence (ELINT) is intelligence gathered by the use of electronic sensors. In ELINT, intelligence gathered is generally those other than personal communications. The purpose is often to ascertain the capabilities of a target, such as the ******** of radar. The sensors used to gather that data may be active or passive. A given signal is analyzed and compared to recorded data for known signal types. With COMINT, voice conversations and messages between individuals or institutions can be detected, as well as intelligence information can be accessed by analyzing the captured signals.
